Cayce Quinn was a character originally made out of a "J Jonah Jameson behavior towards Spiderman but as a detective" joke with another character, Blackout, but later developed into a major character, eventually becoming basically the protagonist. I ended up showing off that "Antagonist v.s Protagonist" dynamic with Cayce and Blackout's design through the opposing red and blue tones in their design. Cayce always had a rather simple design from his original iteration. When making his outfit, classic noir-style clothing was heavily referenced, including a traditional trench coat for full functionality. Despite dressing "older" than someone his age would typically dress, elements like his messier hairstyle and where the clothes, like the pants' waistband, rest on his body are used to show more modern elements in his overall design. Generally, while his overall design was set from the beginning, the biggest issue with designing Cayce was his hairstyle, as it was a bit difficult to visualize at different angles, and it took a while to decide whether to have it messier or neater. I eventually went with a messier look to help give off the look that he doesn't get a lot of sleep and is constantly on the move, with not a lot of time to keep it looking perfect. The messy look also helped make it "fluffier" or "softer" to quietly show off the fact that he isn't really all that cold and calculating, but more of a big softie type of character at heart.
